Visual exploration 2, Character and narrative, Week 1 (25/01/2024)

In the first week into the module of character and narrative, we were given two historical figures from a random selection to begin our character development research. The two historical figures I got were Marie Antoinette and Barbara McClintock.

Similar to the colour story research, in the beginnings of my research into these two historical figures I'm use a similar structure to the Kipling method of asking the following questions; Who (who is the historical figure), when (when were they born/die/live), where (where did they live/travel/residence), how (how did they live they're lives). These different questions will help to develop general information about the figure to aid my development of they're personality, life and physical appearance.

Who?

Marie Antoinette

- Last queen of France before the French revolution (1789-1799)

When?

- Born on the 9th of November 1755

- Died on the 16th of October 1793 (at the age of 37)

Where?

- Born in Hofburg, Vienna, Austria

- Moved to France in 1770 (14-15 years old)

How?

- Married Louis XVI on the 16-17 of May 1770 (Marie was 14/15 and Louis was 16)

- When she made her first appearance in the French capital 50,000 crowded the streets surrounding the place (estimated 30 people died due to the crush)

- Marie's royal hairdresser Léonard Autié created her iconic hairstyles/wigs which along with arrays of decorations such as feathers, jewels and model battleships reached heights of four feet high

- Marie was a teetotaller (never drank alcohol)

- Marie gave birth to all her four children due to Louis XVI decree that all French queens and princess must give birth in public to ensure the child's legitimacy

- Marie played the harp, flute and harpsichord to a high standard and in her childhood met Mozart in 1762 when he performed a recital for the imperial family

- Marie ordered the construction of the Hameau de la Reine in 1783 which served as a rural escape from the responsibilities and structure of court life for the queen (glamourized country living/cottagecore)

Who?

Barbara McClintock

- An American scientist and cytogeneticist

When?

- Born on the 16th of June 1902

- Died on the 2nd of September 1999 (at the age of 90)

Where?

- Born in Hartford, Connecticut, United States

- Died in Huntington, New York, United States

How?

- One of four siblings

- Won the 1983 Nobel prize in physiology/medicine

- Achieved bachelor's, masters and doctoral degrees from Cornell university in Ithaca, New York (1923-) despite women not being able to study/major in genetics

- In college she was part of the student government and played banjo in a jazz band

- Most notable discovery within her work was genetic transposition (DNA sequence that moves from one location on the genome to another)

- Her research showed the importance of evolution and how new mutations within DNA sequences can lead to diseases (such as hemophilia and cancer)

- Primarily used corn to study cytogeneticist (for 26 years) at Cold spring harbor laboratory on Long island, New York

- Never married due to personal choice and devotion to research

- In 1933 McClintock began a working partnership with German geneticist Curt Stern in Berlin which was cut short due to the political turmoil in German in 1934
